What to Expect During Dry Needling

If you are maybe on the fence about whether you should have dry needling performed, we are here to help you make your decision. At ChiroCare, we have been sharing the benefits of this treatment method with residents of Fairlawn and the surrounding areas of Bath and Copley for many years. Dry needling is a procedure that is used to treat patients that are experiencing a decrease in their range of motion due to scar tissue buildup or muscle tightness. It also helps to treat disc and joint problems.

The Procedure

During the procedure, our chiropractor will use a thin unmedicated needle to penetrate the skin deep into the tissue of the muscle. The myofascial trigger point and all surrounding areas will be stimulated by the needle. A twitch reflex will then be produced which helps in decreasing muscle tension while also reducing pain and irritation.

Following your first dry needling session, our chiropractor will look for improvements such as an improved range of motion and a reduction in tightness and pain. You may feel sore following the procedure or notice some bruising. However, you can apply heat and ice to the treated areas to reduce any discomfort. The good thing about dry needling is that while it can be used alone, it is often combined with other treatments such as foam rolling, massage, and electrical stimulation to relieve your pain, restore your range of motion, and improve your body’s natural ability to heal itself.

Does Dry Needling Hurt?

It is common for patients to feel a slight discomfort while the needling penetrates the skin. However, any discomfort that is noticed is only temporary. You can expect to experience twitch responses during the procedure. This may include an ache or a cramp as the muscle begins to relax.
